In addition to doing voiceover work, I’m a recovering band booster – having served as a local (NoCo) band’s Operations lead for the 8 years my 2 kids were going through the program.
One of the things that really bugged me during that time was hearing the kids learn and perform amazing music, then looking up and seeing it come out of horns that looked like the ones below.
So I decided to do something about it. I asked the director for the worst looking horns the school owned, and I got these – finish gone, a couple of dents, a bent lead pipe, non-functioning spit valves – and I got to work.
Fixing the bend, dents,, valves, and solder joints wasn’t too bad. Then I started doing research on re-lacquering brass - I bought a sisal wheel and some jewelers rouge, and got to work. Got some brass lacquer spray and here’s what I gave them back.
I’ve recently retired from a career in high tech, and I want to help other music programs that have instruments that just don’t look as good as the kids make them sound. I don’t work on wind instruments and I’m not a full shop that can deal with technical issues with valves, etc. And if it’s a high-end Bach or Yamaha concert horn, I won’t work on those either.
But if your program as horn like the one above, I can get it looking good and functioning well for a lot less than a local or even remote shop.
How much? Other places will charge $1000 or more to fully re-lacquer a horn. I’ll do it for $250 for a trumpet or a mello, more for a trombone or baritone. Hit me up via the contact form and let’s talk.
